The anion gap mainly refers to the difference between the total number of cations measured in the serum and the total number of anions, and the result of the calculation can be used to identify whether the body has metabolic acidosis.
The anion gap can be calculated from the difference between a conventionally determinable cation (Na+) in plasma and a conventionally determined anion (Cl- and HCO3-), i.e., AG = [Na+] - {[Cl-] + [HCO3-]}. The normal value of AG is 10-14 mmol/l with an average of 12 mmol/l.
The normal value of anion gap (AG) is 8-16mmol/l. If the calculation result is >16mmol/l, metabolic acidosis may occur.
